The recent discussion of Ford’s Mustang SVO missing its intended mark brought up discussion of the Special Vehicles Operation follow-up, the original Special Vehicle Team Cobra from 1993. While not quite in Corvette territory, this 3,255-pound ‘Stang’s 17-inch wheels, 235hp and 0-60 in 5.7 were pretty hot stuff in ’93. Its clean, aggressive appearance -complete with return of the pony to the grille- would arguably make it the best looking variant of the Fox-platform Mustang.

It was this Cobra’s “GT-40″ cylinder heads, large-diameter intake runners, valvetrain improvements and a big-bore throttle body that opened up the 302-cu.in. V-8′s breathing. While this generation of Cobra didn’t get the trick independent rear suspension of its very rare successor, it did receive altered anti-roll bars, springs, bushings and shock valve damping rates.

I dug back through my brochure collection and pulled out the four-page flyer I had starring this rare and special Mustang; click the images below to enlarge.
